Why are mushrooms and other fungi important?
It is becoming apparent that the effects of current farming methods are rapidly deteriorating the health and integrity of both farmlands and ecosystems. Currently we are systematically destroying soil ecology and making plants increasingly dependent on artificial fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and other artificial chemicals. It is imperative that we begin synergizing current agricultural methods with the underlying ecological systems or else the wide ranging destructive effects may become irreversible. Mushrooms help us do this. Not only are gourmet mushrooms delicious with many healthy medicinal uses, their underground mycelium do much to build and heal soil by breaking down complex hydrocabons (pesticides, herbicides, oil, etc). They also provide highways of nutrition and networks communication which links together a garden into one strong and healthy community.
